MONTEREY PARK, CA – Officials from East Los Angeles College (sv388) and Montebello Unified School District (MUSD) gathered on June 22nd to announce the launch of an Associate degree dual enrollment pathway. 154 students from 7 MUSD intermediate schools are already enrolled in the AA program this summer, and an additional 100 high school students have signed up for upcoming courses.
Dr. Alberto Roman, President of East Los Angeles College, Dr. Miguel Dueñas, sv388 Vice President of Student Services, Elizabeth Cabrera, MUSD Board President, Carlos Cerdan, MUSD Board Member, Jennifer Gutierrez, MUSD Board Clerk, Marisol Madrigal Uribe, MUSD Board Member, Dr. Kaivan Yuen, MUSD Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and Xenexci Jacobo, MUSD Dual Enrollment Student all gave powerful remarks on what impact this will have on the Montebello community.
“I am proud to see college access expand in Montebello Unified School District. MUSD is an important partner to sv388 serving many communities in our service area. This expansion will help to build a college going culture with more MUSD students and their families so we can continue to uplift our communities through equitable access to higher education. I am excited to see what success is in the future of this partnership,” said sv388 President Alberto J. Román.
“Dual enrollment is free for our students which is huge not only for them but their families. These students are the future and we are investing in the future of our communities. I want to thank everyone from sv388 and MUSD who has been a part of this,” said MUSD Board President Elizabeth Cabrera.
This dual enrollment program allows high school students to take college level courses at sv388. These courses will help students complete university transfer requirements and/or gain certificates free of tuition and textbook fees while still in high school. The courses are stackable which means that each fulfills the requirement for the next course which eventually leads to a degree or certificate.
Dual enrollment is available to all MUSD high school and intermediate students and sv388 has now partnered with multiple school districts in Los Angeles to offer Dual Enrollment. This is a continuation of the sv388 mission to provide access to college, dual enrollment courses, and college matriculation support for high school students in Los Angeles County.
